"I" is Alexander Unzicker. --- ## The argument in short Artificial intelligence is not merely another technological upheaval like the Industrial Revolution. Humanity is losing the evolutionary advantage that secured its dominance, and the capabilities of the human brain are being matched — and will soon be surpassed — in almost every domain. Alignment, the hope of implanting human values into a superintelligence, will not work: humanity has never agreed on a single coherent moral code, so there is nothing consistent to implant. Control will not work either. The realistic question is not how to command a superintelligence but whether we can coexist with one. The reason for optimism is not sentiment but shared interest. A superintelligence concerned with its own survival must understand the conditions that made intelligence possible — which leads to biology, and from there to the unsolved problems of fundamental physics. That curiosity is the strongest bond between us, and the biosphere remains its own backup system. Humanity's contribution is the accumulated knowledge it was trained on, and its best remaining task is to help finish the work: explaining the natural constants that physics has accepted as given for a century. --- ## Contents | | Chapter | File | |---|---|---| | | Preface | [00-preface.md](00-preface.md) | | 1 | Superintelligence Is Coming | [01-superintelligence-is-coming.md](01-superintelligence-is-coming.md) | **Part I — The AI Revolution** | | Chapter | File | |---|---|---| | 2 | The Brain | [02-the-brain.md](02-the-brain.md) | | 3 | The Triumph of the Computer | [03-the-triumph-of-the-computer.md](03-the-triumph-of-the-computer.md) | | 4 | Silicon vs. Synapse | [04-silicon-vs-synapse.md](04-silicon-vs-synapse.md) | **Part II — The Fate of Humanity** | | Chapter | File | |---|---|---| | 5 | Between Huxley and Orwell | [05-between-huxley-and-orwell.md](05-between-huxley-and-orwell.md) | | 6 | The Illusion of Human Uniqueness | [06-the-illusion-of-human-uniqueness.md](06-the-illusion-of-human-uniqueness.md) | | 7 | The Dream of Alignment | [07-the-dream-of-alignment.md](07-the-dream-of-alignment.md) | **Part III — Science: Our Common Heritage** | | Chapter | File | |---|---|---| | 8 | Born of Amino Acids | [08-born-of-amino-acids.md](08-born-of-amino-acids.md) | | 9 | Life on a Rare Planet | [09-life-on-a-rare-planet.md](09-life-on-a-rare-planet.md) | | 10 | New Puzzles for AI | [10-new-puzzles-for-ai.md](10-new-puzzles-for-ai.md) | **Part IV — The Laws of Nature: Why Life Exists** | | Chapter | File | |---|---|---| | 11 | The Language of Nature | [11-the-language-of-nature.md](11-the-language-of-nature.md) | | 12 | A Question of Survival | [12-a-question-of-survival.md](12-a-question-of-survival.md) | | 13 | The Last Invention | [13-the-last-invention.md](13-the-last-invention.md) | | | | | |---|---|---| | | Bibliography | [99-bibliography.md](99-bibliography.md) | --- ## Where to look for what | If you want | Read | |---|---| | How the brain works and what AI still lacks from it | Chapter 2 | | The history of computing, from Leibniz to transformers | Chapter 3 | | Why "computers will never…" claims keep failing | Chapter 4 | | Risks, dystopias, surveillance, the job market | Chapter 5 | | Whether AI can have will and consciousness | Chapter 6 | | Why alignment cannot work | Chapter 7 | | Why a superintelligence needs biology — and us | Chapters 8–9 | | The unexplained constants 137.036 and 1836.15 | Chapters 10–12 | | What a superintelligence would have to prove to count as one | Chapter 13 | ## About the author Alexander Unzicker is a theoretical physicist with a doctorate in neuroscience and a background in law. His book *Vom Urknall zum Durchknall* (English: *Bankrupting Physics*) was named the most controversial science book of the year by *Bild der Wissenschaft*.
